is a contraction of أَىُّ مَا, meaning أَىُّ شَىْءٍ: it is thus in the saying, أَيْمَ هُوَيَا فُلَانُ [What thing is it, O such a one?]: and أَيْمَ تَقُولُ [What thing sayest thou?]. (TA.)
