عَايءِمٌ

[Hence,] سَفِينٌ عُوَّمٌ means عَايءِمَةٌ [of which عُوَّمٌ is plural; i. e. Ships coursing along]. (TA.)

One says سِنُونَ عُوَّمٌ, in which the latter word is a corroborative to the former; (S, K; *) [apparently meaning Tedious, because severe, years;] like as one says شُغْلٌ شَاغِلٌ: as though plural of عَايءِمٌ; but it is not used alone, because it is not a subst., being only a corroborative: (S:) or, as is said in the M, it should by rule be عُومٌ; for [it is plural of
أَعْوَمُ, and] the plural of أَفْعَلُ is فُعْلٌ; but they pronounce it as above, as though the singular were عَامٌ عَايءِمٌ: ISd says, عَامٌ
أَعْوَمُ is an intensive expression, and I think that the meaning is, [A year] that seems long to people because of its drought, or barrenness; and similar to it is
عَامٌ مُعِيمٌ, mentioned by Lh. (TA.)
