هَوَسٌ

Somewhat of madness, or insanity, or diabolical possession, (S, A, K,) in the head: (A:) or a vertigo, or giddiness, and confused noise, in the head. (A, TA.)

Hence used by the vulgar to signify Hope. (TA.)
