فِرْعَوْنُ

[Pharaoh;] the surname of El-Weleed Ibn-Mus'ab, king of Egypt: (S:) or the surname of every king of Egypt: (K:) or it signifies, (K,) or signifies also, (S,) [apparently used as a proper name,] anyone inordinately proud or corrupt or unbelieving; (S, K;) insolent and audacious in acts of rebellion or disobedience, or extravagant therein and in wrongdoing: as also فُرْعُونُ and فُرْعَوْنُ; (K;) the last mentioned by IKh, from Fr, and anomalous: (TA:) plural فَرَاعِنِةٌ. (Msb, K, TA.) It is said in a tradition, أَحَدُنَا فِرْعَوْنُ هٰذِهِ الأُمَّةِ [apparently meaning One of us is the Pharaoh of this people, or nation]. (S: in one of my copies of the S, أَخَذْنَا and فِرْعَوْنَ.)

And [it is said that] الفِرْعَوْنُ signifies The crocodile, (K, TA,) in the language of the Copts. (TA.)
