He made him to understand: the verb being used in this sense in the Qur'an, 8:23, لَوْعَلِمَ اللّٰهُ فِيهِمْ خَيْرًا لَأَسْمَعَهُمْ [Had God known any good in them, He had made them to understand]. (TA.)

أَسْمَعَكَ اللّٰهُ May God not make thee to be deaf. (TA.)

أَسْمَعَتْ She sang. (TA.) One says to a female singer, أَسْمِعِينَا Sing thou to us: thus used in a verse of Tarafeh. (TA.)

اسمع الدَّلْوَ (tropical:) He made, or put, a مِسْمَع [q. v.] to the bucket. (S, K, TA.) And in like manner, اسمع الزِّنْبِيلَ (K) (tropical:) He made, or put, what are termed مِسْمَعَانِ to the basket. (TA.)
