سِيرَةٌ

[i. q. سَيْرٌ as meaning A going, in any manner, or any pace; &c.: see above:] a subst. from 1 in the first of the senses assigned to it above. (M, K.) Lh mentions the saying, إِنَّهُ لَحَسَنُ السِّيرَةِ [Verily he is good in going, &c.]. (M: in the TA, السَّيْرَةِ, as having the meaning here next following.)

Also, (M,) or سَيْرَةٌ, (K,) [but the former seems to be the right, being agreeable with analogy, whereas the latter is anomalous,] A mode, or manner, of going, &c. (M, K.)

And the former, (tropical:) A way, course, rule, mode, or manner, of acting or conduct or life or the like; synonym طَرِيقَةٌ (S, M, Mgh, Msb, K) and سُنَّةٌ (M, K) and مَذْهَبٌ: (Mgh:) plural سِيَرٌ. (Mgh, Msb.) You say, سَارَ بِهِمْ سِيرَةً حَسَنَةً (tropical:) [He pursued with them a good way of acting]. (S.) And سَارَ الوَالِى فِى الرَّعِيَّهِ سِيرَةً حَسَنَةً (tropical:) [The prefect, or governor, pursued among the subjects a good way of acting]; (A, Msb; *) and in like manner, سِيرَةً قَبِيحَةً [a bad way of acting]. (Msb.)

(assumed tropical:) The record of a man's actions and pious works; the prefixed noun صَحِيفَة being understood. (Mgh.)

(tropical:) Stories of the ancients: (M, K:) [or so سِيرَةُ أَوَّلِينَ:] you say, هٰذَا فِى سِيرَةِ الأَوَّلِينَ (tropical:) [This is in the stories of the ancients]. (A.)

[Hence it is used in the present day as meaning (assumed tropical:) The mention of a person or thing: and (assumed tropical:) a matter, or subject, of discourse.]

Also, as a law term, (Mgh,) or so [the plural] سِيَرٌ, (Mgh, Msb,) (assumed tropical:) Military expeditions; or the memorable actions thereof; (Msb;) or the affairs thereof. (Mgh.) And they say السِّيَرُ الكَبِيرُ [meaning (assumed tropical:) The great book of military expeditions; for كِتَابٌ السِّيَرُ الكَبِيرُ]; using a masculine epithet in lieu of the [suppressed] prefixed noun كِتَاب. (Mgh.)

Also, the singular, (assumed tropical:) Mode, or manner, of being; state, or condition; synonym هَيْيءَةٌ, (M, O, Msb, K,) and حَالَةٌ. (O, Msb.) So in the Qur'an, 20:22. (M, O, TA.)

Also Wheat, or other provision, that is brought from a place to be laid up in store. (S, O, K.)
