خَطَأٌ

A wrong action; a mistake, or an error; opposite of صَوَابٌ; as also ↓خَطَاءٌ (S, Msb, K) and ↓خَطْءٌ: (K:) according to some, it is synonym with خَطِيْيءَةٌ and خِطْءٌ; and is a verbal noun used as a simple subst; but according to others, (TA,) it signifies an unintentional fault or offence or disobedience; (K, TA;) a subst. from أَخْطَأَ: (M, Msb: [see 1, first sentence:]) and according to the M, ↓خَطَاءٌ is a subst. from خَطِيء [and therefore synonym with خَطِيْيءَةٌ according to the general acceptation of خَطِيءَ].
